The Electronic Balance Board is a carpeted board with four switches that detect balance shifts in the forward, backward, left, and right directions. Used in conjunction with the Wayne Saccadic Fixator, the Balance Board can be used to test and train spatial integration, eye-body coordination, body reaction time (weight-shifting), and balance.
It has been found that the individual who lacks good dynamic balance will usually lack fusional ability. Fusion is the visual ability to integrate the visual pattern from each eye so that space is perceived in a normal manner. While body balance and visual balance is being built, a good directionality concept is being established. Directionality is important for basic reading and for building number concepts. The Electronic Balance Board is designed to aid the individual to develop good dynamic balance.
The Electronic Balance Board can be connected to the Saccadic Fixator directly or through the Control Center Module. When connected directly, the four switches act as extensions of the membrane switches in the four cardinal positions on the fixator. This allows the user to respond to the Fixator's lights by shifting his body weight in the direction prompted by the Fixator. Using the Control Center Module enables two additional modes of operation: the user can be required to maintain balance during any activity (going off balance "freezes" the currently-running activity), and the fixator can count the number of times the user goes off-balance during a specified interval.
