Additional application ideas for the Wayne Liquid Crystal Windos Display
A portable liquid crystal display for projecting and viewing different areas of a 5"x 8" transparency. The transparency can be viewed directly or it can be projected on a screen for use in testing and training procedures.
The display is actually a shutter for exposing selected portions (windows) of a transparency.
The display is connected to a computer which is programmed to open from 1 to 16 windows (slots) for viewing the material. The display operates (either manually or automatically) like a shutter or shade to open up different areas (windows) of the transparency. These windows can be opened in steps or at random from 1/100 second to 10 seconds. Size of the windows can vary from 1/16 op the area to the entire area.
A built-in timer records the elapsed time of each pattern sequence. This is displayed on a computer screen.
For direct viewing (near point) or distance (projection)
For developmental visual therapy
Test & train:
For convenience and portability a special computer is included as part of the system. The computer was originally designed by Zenith Electronics for use by the US Internal Revenue Service. Although the computers have been used, they are in excellent condition and are fully guaranteed for six months.
A special padded case is provided for carrying the display and the computer.
The computer will boot-up and a world map including the date and time will appear on the screen. Adjust the contrast for best image (left side).
Below the screen and above the key board are special "F" keys. Depress the key with a floppy disk picture (icon). Allow 20 seconds for the program to appear.
When the program is displayed, you may select either "patterns to flash" menu or "sequences to show" menu.

The "P" key selects the windo pattern which will open.
Type the "P" key followed by the number of the pattern. Press "Return". The "pattern to show" will appear again, note, a small box appears on the left side of the screen.
Repeat pattern? No Yes
Typing "Y" (or moving the curser to "Yes") will cause the pattern to repeat; ie, if the selected pattern was set to open a full screen for 1/25 of a second, then the full screen will open and close repeatedly, flashing "on and off" at 1/25 second each time. If "no repeat" pattern is selected, (typing an "N") then the full screen will flash open for 1/25 sec., only once.
Note: the "off" time must be set for the repeated "on/off."
Important: the "Return" (RT) key must always be pressed after the "repeat pattern" is displayed.
Depress letter "T" key to display "on" time menu (time window is open)
SECONDS A 4 B 2 C 1 D 1/10 E 1/25 F 1/50 G 1/100 H OTHER I WAIT FOR SWITCH
"OTHER" (option H) permits selection of any time period from 1/100 seconds to 10 sec. Enter the time in units of 1/100 second, i.e. if time of 1/2 second is required, depress the "H" key and type 50. This represents 50/100 seconds.
"WAIT FOR SWITCH" (option I) is for manual operation. The windows will open in the selected sequence each time either the "R" key or the hand switch is depressed.
Select the time "on" period by depressing the appropriate key shown in the menu. Now type "Return" (RT) key. If no "on" time is selected, the window will open and close for what ever time was selected on a previous setting. The screen will always display this setting. Remember to type the "Return" key after selecting the time menu.
Type the "R" key or the press the hand switch to open (flash) the selected window for the selected time.
Note: if a "Y" ("yes") is entered for the "repeat pattern" an "off" time must also be entered.
Depress letter "O" to display
"OFF" TIME MENU (TIME WINDOW IS CLOSED) SECONDS A 4 B 2 C 1 D 1/10 E 1/25 F 1/50 G 1/100 H OTHER I WAIT FOR SWITCH J NONE
Pressing "O" will display the "off" time menu. Select a time and press the "Return" (RT) key.
Pressing the "R" key or the hand switch will start (run) or stop the program.
Press the "Q" key if you want to exit the program and go to a DOS prompt.

After typing the "s" key type the number to select the sequence, amd press the "return" (rt) key. A small box will appear on the left side of the listings:
Repeat sequence? No Yes
For a repeat sequence, press the "Return" (RT) key. For a single sequence, select "no" (no repeat sequence): type "N" and press the "Return" (RT) key.
The sequence menu ("S") lists the available dynamic action of the windows: i.e.,
"S" 1. circle quadrants
The screen is divided into four quad windows. Each window will open and close for one second and rotate clockwise. After the four quad windows are opened and closed, the sequence will stop. For a repeating sequence select the "yes" option when the "repeat sequence" is displayed.
"S" 10. Shade full 1 strip high (8)
Starting at the top of the display a window strip opens and closes moving down like a window shade to the bottom of the display. There will be a total of (8) window strip positions. For a repeating sequence select the "yes" option.
The "shade" program will open a window strip (row) and will then sequence down stopping after the last strip (row). The quadrant pattern will open 1/4 of the windo, and the 1/2 strip program will open 1/2 row. The number following the "shade" indicates the steps in the sequence.
If no "on" or "off" time has been selected the time will be the last pre-set time. The "on time" can be changed by depressing the "T" key and selecting the time from the menu. followed by "Return" (RT) key. If you wish, you may pre-set the "off" time. "off" time is the period the window is closed following each step in the sequence. To set "off" time, type the "O" key and select time from the menu. Type "return" key.
The "off" time default is "none." Each step will immediately follow the next step in the "repeat pattern".
You want to open the top window strip of the display for a time period of 1/10 sec. followed by a one second off pause, and then moving the window downward to the next window for 1/10 sec. followed by a one second pause. Continue downward movement until all eight window strips have opened and closed.
SIMPLIFIED CODE: S10(RT) Y(RT) TD(RT) OC(RT)
If you want the strip to remain open until the switch is depressed, change step #6 to the "wait for switch." ("I").
If you want the window strip to flash open for 1/10 second, but not move to the next window strip until the switch is depressed, change step #9 for manual control of the "off" time. Select the "wait for switch" "I".
If no "off time" is selected the default setting is "none". ("J")
Remember, when the "repeat sequence" box appears, press (RT) for auto repeat of sequence. Press "N" for a non repeat sequence, and then press (RT).
As an alternative condensed method for selecting operating modes without using the computer display, type in this code:
SX (RT) Y (RT) TX (RT) OX (RT) (do not type space bar) ("X" represents selections from the menus)
The above code will replicate the following:
To select an "on" time not listed in the time menu, choose the "H" (other). Enter time by selecting and typing a number from 1 to 999. The units are in 1/100 sec. i.e., type "3" for 3/100 seconds. Type 900 for 900/100 sec. or 9 seconds. Remember to press the "Return"(RT) key after entering the time selection.
For manual operation of pattern or sequence mode, select the "I" (wait for switch) in the time menu. Depressing the "r" key or the hand switch will open the window, depressing the switch will close the window.
In the sequence mode, depressing the switch again will open the next window in the sequence. The built-in timer will record the time each window is opened, and at the end of the sequence the total elapsed time. In the pattern mode, the timer will record the time the window is open.
In the "wait for switch mode" (manual mode) the elapsed time a window is opened and closed is recorded and displayed on the computer screen.
In the "pattern mode" when the "run" switch is activated the window will open. When the "run" switch is depressed, the window will close. The open window time will be displayed.
In the "sequence" mode when the "run" switch is depressed, the first window in the sequence will open. Each time the "run" button is depressed, the next window in the sequence will open. The computer screen will display the open window time and then the accumulated total elapsed time. This pattern will continue until the end of the sequence. At the end of the sequence, the total time will be displayed.
Note: when set to non-repeat sequence, the computer displays the elapsed time.
The top line window will open. Read exposed line(s) and depress hand switch. Next line(s) appears. After eight windows open, the elapsed time will be displayed.
Upon completing the first page of material, the average time/window can be determined by dividing the total elapsed time by number 8. This resulting number will be used to set the automatic speed. If the total final time is 32 seconds, then the average time/line will be 4 seconds.
PROGRAM CODE: S10(RT)N(RT)TI(RT)OJ(RT)(DO NOT TYPE SPACEBAR)
Same as selecting: sequencing mode #10 (shading one strip) and time "open" (wait for switch).
If you wish to decrease the time to 3.5 seconds/line, enter
PROGRAM CODE S10 (RT) N (RT) TH 350 (RT)
Each window will now open for exactly 3.5 seconds or a total elapsed time of 28 seconds.
Each time "hand switch" is depressed, one-half of the window strip will open in sequence from left to right continuing to the bottom. After 16 windows have opened, the total elapsed time will be displayed.
PROGRAM CODE: S6 (RT)N(RT) TI (RT) OJ(RT)
PROGRAM CODE: S7(RT) N(RT) TA(RT) OH(RT)50 (RT)
To increase the reading speed just reduce the time period the window is open. I.E. TC or TB, etc.
To eliminate the "off time", change "OH" to "OJ" (no "off" time). The default setting is "OJ" depending upon pre-set program or values.
If the total elapsed time in the self pacing mode was 8 seconds (or an average of 1/2 second per one half line), set the code as follows:
S6(RT) N (RT) TH(RT) 50(RT) OJ(RT)
To increase the time period, enter code:
TH (RT) X (RT)
Where X can be either 60 or 80, etc (60/100 or 80/100 seconds).
To decrease the time period, enter same code. however X can then be any other number, H (RT), 45, 30, (45/100 or 30/100 seconds).
To open and close the full window for 1/50 second when the "hand switch" is pressed.
PROGRAM CODE: P10 (RT) N (RT) TF(RT) OF(RT)
"TF" represents the time from the "time" menu for selection of 1/50 second.
Select the sequence of windows; select the "flash open"; select the "off" time between windows. If no "flash " time is selected, the "on" time will be 1 second. If no "off" time is selected, the default is "none" (if no preset program or timing has been selected).
Automatic tachistscopic action of 16 windows, random selection, flash "open" time of 1/25 second (non-repeating) with an "off" time of 1 second between the window sequence.
PROGRAM CODE: S23 (RT)N (RT) TE (RT) OC (RT)
T refers to time menu and E refers to 1/25 second; OC refers to off time of 1 second.
Remember: Random patterns are repetitive without end. Random sequences open a finite number of windows as indicated by a number in (); ie, (8) indicates that a total of 8 windows will open in a random sequence pattern.
Select a transparency with 16 half rows of words, numbers or patterns.
Each time the hand switch is depressed, a half strip will be projected. Trainee should read the far image and then rapidly read the near copy. The projected "far" copy will be random. The elapsed time to accommodate the 16 random projected images will be displayed on the computer screen.
